Neuropathy (Nerve pain)

What is Peripheral Neuropathy

The nervous system is a wide range of neural networks that allow communication between the brain and the rest of the body.

These web-like networks can be seen as electrical lines that send signals to specific areas of the body and back up to the brain for communication. For example, if you step on a sharp object, the nerves in the foot send pain signals to the brain, then the brain subsequently sends signals to the muscles in the leg to quickly step off the sharp object.

When these electrical lines required for communication get distorted or lost, patients experience a wide range of symptoms depending on the source of the problem.

What causes Peripheral Neuropathy

Diabetic neuropathy, nerve damage stemming from chronic diabetes, is the most common cause of peripheral neuropathy in the United States. Neuropathy can also result from other causes like chemotherapy, injury, surgery infections, or exposure to certain toxins. Most commonly, peripheral neuropathy symptoms initially present in the feet and hands and will progress closer to the trunk as the condition worsens.

The Symptoms

Symptoms of Peripheral Neuropathy vary widely depending on the cause and may include:

Numbness, Tingling, Burning

Swelling & Discoloration

Weakness

Pain

Hypersensitivity

Heaviness/ "dead feeling"

Loss of balance

Difficulty Sleeping

Peripheral nerve damage can have life-threatening complications, and currently, the most common cause for lower extremity amputation is due to diabetic neuropathy.
